Did Someone Say Cake?

Today's status: "dad's birfday, feta cheese, flip flops & a surprise cake (that i will have to refrain from eating)."

Go figure - we order Portillo's Famous Chocolate Cake in celebration of my dad's birthday here at the office and I can't even eat it. If you haven't eaten this stuff, you are missing out on heaven. Chocolate heaven.

So happy birthday, Daddy-o! Have your cake and eat my piece too!

"There Ain't No Doubt I Love This Land"

This post is a nod to my brave, brave cousin Jay, who is on his way to Afghanistan as I type...the best F15 fighter pilot there is. We're praying for him and know that he is doing this in support of this great country we live in.

We spend so much time thinking about how things could be better and planning the next step. Really, it's enjoying the now, the present – the right here that we should embrace.

That said: I'm going to attempt a new direction in my Gmail status and pick out the good things in each day - either that already occurred or that I am looking forward to. It'll be a challenge on the days where you think, "Why did I even get out of bed?" but I've never been one to back down from a challenge.

Today's status: "great morning run, vanilla creamer, sunshine, haircut & whole foods."

Maybe this blog is meant to be a jumpstarter for enjoying the little things through a status. That's the glory of writing: you just never know where it will take you. As for today, I sure hope it takes me to a manageable new hairdo!

Mad For March

Today celebrates a grand day in history (of college basketball).

For it's the start of March Madness. Brackets are completed. Teams have been chosen to win the big title. People are pumped.

Normally, I pick UNC to win it all each year (this as a result of believing I was indeed the next Mia Hamm at 12 years old). We won't even touch the UNC factor this year. Let's just say the brackets were a challenge yesterday.

In one bracket I played it semi-safe choosing Villanova and in the other, I went bold with a New Mexico victory.

Let the madness begin.

It Is Real Simple

Every day, I receive the Daily Thought from Real Simple. (Almost) every day, I love it.

This was the quote a day or two ago and it hit me last night just how true it is. I grabbed a few drinks with an old friend and made a few new ones at Howl At the Moon - one of my favorite places because the recipe of two dueling pianos is my favorite entree.

The pianists made fun of our table's request to hear them play Miley's "Party in the USA" then after making fun of what a terrible song it was, they actually played it. I was bopping and singing along and happened to scan the bar during the song. All the hands went up and people's heads started noddin' like yeahhh...I realized:

THIS was a moment of happiness that seized me.

It was the little things - people smiling in unison, the company of good people and a jovial atmosphere.

Thanks for showing me the glory of the little things, life. Keep up the good work.

Gettin' Lucky ♣

What a great St. Patrick's Day!

Well, let me explain! It's really quite simple. It's 59 degrees, sun is high, wind is calm, the Chicago WaterTaxis are back up and running...

and someone tied a pretty green balloon to the Wabash bridge.

Go ahead and feel lucky.

Fresh Southern Comfort

And then there are days when I am really happy that Mark goes to school in the south because he brings me new, fresh, enjoyable music such as this:

"Wagon Wheel" Old Crow Medicine Show

The song was mostly written by Bob Dylan but he never got the chance to perform it.

Not only is the song amazing, but their band name rhymes! Does it get better than that?

Quite possibly not!

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tooniiiiight

You Know You Live In Chicago When...

:: You see 47 & sunny in the forecast and think it's perfectly acceptable to wear shorts running and maybe just a long-sleeve shirt.

:: The sun is out for the FOURTH day in a row and your smile grows just a tad wider.

:: The signs for "No Parking from 9a-4p February 26 - March 6" have been removed from your street and you're feeling estatic about it.

:: You'd rather walk to the grocery store than worry about parking on the street to pick up milk.

...and these are just a few things. I could go on and on, but if I did, then I might miss this hint of spring weather and not get my outside run in!

Here sits Jules, contemplating how to make her newly-engaged life shift to Chicago.

Eat Your Heart Out.

I would like to thank Giordano's Pizza for continuing their Valentine's Day promotion through the last day of February.

This is what Friday night looked like:

It was definitely worth the wait (as most good things are).
