all dogs go to heaven.

Especially this one:

My sweet baby girl found herself a better home on Saturday (June 15). At 10, her health went downhill fast these past two months and the vet deduced it was cancer. She was having more bad days than good...and no one wants to live like that.

Crimson seemed to have a clue as to what was happening because he was slowly distancing himself from her over the past couple of weeks. (Author's note: for those who don't know, Crimson and Maggie are littermates. Brother and sister. We went to go get Mags and ended up with the big guy too. Dogs will do that to you when you're not looking.)

They were always inseparable. If one was outside and one was in, the reunion once they were both in (or out) was momentous! They looked out for each other and the love and loyalty was tangible. Even though Crimson had a tendency to eat Maggie's food, she learned to become an excellent sharer.

I refuse to read or watch Marley & Me for the obvious reasons (and I've refused since the day each came out), but the book is chock full of how I feel about dogs:

“A person can learn a lot from a dog, even a loopy one like ours. Marley taught me about living each day with unbridled exuberance and joy, about seizing the moment and following your heart. He taught me to appreciate the simple things-a walk in the woods, a fresh snowfall, a nap in a shaft of winter sunlight. And as he grew old and achy, he taught me about optimism in the face of adversity. Mostly, he taught me about friendship and selflessness and, above all else, unwavering loyalty.”

Maggie wasn't so much loopy - she just pranced around a lot when she got excited and she hated the wooden floors on the Cape. She had zero interest in fetching and looked at you as if you had seven heads with a face that said "you want me to actually go GET that?" What a princess. She was quick to lick the ice cream bowl when you were done and she made it very clear she needed to be pet when you were lying down next to her.

RIP, Magpie.

Your stubborn Angel woman ways will be missed.
Say hi to Chelsea for us (and all those other pups!).
